I’m not one of those women who love “beauty parlors”. I can’t stand to sit still for hours while all those chemicals and potions are applied, but on the other hand, I need to do it if I’m going to look in a mirror. Vanity – what can I say?

A few years ago, I witnessed one of those moments that has made me laugh out loud every time I recall it. So, Dear Readers, I’ll do my best to tell the tale here.

I was sitting in the swivel chair waiting for my beautician to cut my hair after being shampooed. As I waited and waited, I realized I seemed to be waiting a long time. I looked up from my magazine, and there wasn’t a beautician in sight. Where were they? I started twisting and turning and then I saw them huddled in a back alcove – all of them – laughing and crying. Some had tears in their eyes – some were bending back and forth. They were trying unsuccessfully to control themselves, but it wasn’t working. A few of them would start to walk out, and then lose it and have to run back.

So, what was so funny? A man had entered the salon and wanted a hair cut. This was obviously his first visit to a beauty salon instead of a barber. Do you know how I know this? Well, apparently the beautician had sent him to the wash station for a shampoo, and told him she’d be there in a minute. There he was at the station, kneeling on the chair, rump high in the air, and his head dangling in the sink. How long he was in that position I have no idea, but the memory of it still makes me giggle. My hair stylist finally came out to do my hair, but she laughed the whole time. Wonder about the stylist who had to tell him to take a seat. Poor guy, he didn’t have a clue. Now that was one time I really had a good time at the beauty parlor.

I’ve always thought of myself as a New Englander in heart. I enjoy all 4 of the seasons and anticipate their arrivals, but that doesn’t mean that I am immune to cabin fever.

The fever seems to vary greatly in intensity and onset among individuals. Some people are suffering as soon as the Fall leaves hit the ground. The sight of the bare branches tells them to get out of town and head South, usually to Florida. The next migration occurs after the New Year. This group leaves soon after the holidays and again head South. The last group leaves the nest for short vacations or get-aways. They come and go- usually on a cruise or to visit friends or relatives.

This year we’ve decided to tough it out and stay here. However, as I write this, I am suffering with this affliction. My immunity is usually quite high, so I don’t suffer until late February. I love the first snow of winter and its bright white cleanness of landscape; I enjoy the icicles that form on the eves of the roof. The beauty of the trees covered in a fresh wet snow thrills me. The ice storms that coat the branches of the bushes outside my picture window amaze me and are breath-taking, BUT then comes February.

By this time, I’ve completed my pet projects and I’ve decided I don’t want to do any more. The snow is no longer pretty. Now it’s brown mounds with patches of mud and ice left-overs everywhere you look. The Calendar of Events in our local newspaper is almost nonexistent. Today’s listings included a page of meetings for addictions and problems of assorted varieties, a kid’s movie event and a Senior Citizen’s seminar on Alzheimer’s Disease. I will be skipping all of these as they will not help my condition.

Valentine’s Day has passed so there are no chocoholic events to attend. The Academy Awards are over, and I have seen all of the movies I care to see. Lent has begun and the mood is gloomy.

Yes, I have “The Fever”. Can you tell? I’m bored, I’m sick of being indoors and I’m tired of shades of brown. Where is Spring with its daffodils and tulips?Bring it on. I’m ready! I guess I am a true New Englander at heart, huh?

Just so happens I have a doctor’s appointment today, and while gathering my stuff to drive to the office, the reminder to take a book popped in my head. I don’t know about you, but one of my pet peeves is the magazines supplied in doctor’s, dentist’s offices and hospitals. All health care professionals must never look in their own waiting rooms. My current dentist apparently loves boating, and subscribes to boating magazines which he them dumps on his patients. Since I get sea sick, I don’t ever want to read a boating magazine. My doctor, on the other hand, must be too busy to read magazines, so he just has old tattered copies of whatever. Now, I don’t know about you, but a “People Magazine” that tells me that Hillary may run for President is not one I care to read. I won’t even begin to go into the magazines that are located in the “second” waiting room. This is the place they make you sit half-naked wrapped in paper. Here they supply a few more real gems for you to read. Should this be something we notify Homeland Security about? OK, I am ready to solve the problem. I propose that everyone bring their own reading material to the office. This will help the book and magazine subscriptions and provide jobs all across our country. For those too poor to afford books or magazines, I suggest that a container be placed in every health care waiting room for patients to donate their discards. The rule is, however, these will not be displayed on coffee tables which encumber the handicapped and elderly, but will be placed in a large box located near the coat rack and door, and if you read something from this container, it must go home with you. Yes, even the recycle folks will be happy with my solution. A Win-Win situation. I feel so much better now.

This is another quote I found tucked away in a junk drawer on a scrap of paper:

“like putting whipped cream on an onion”.

Now, isn’t that a great saying? I don’t know where I found it. I usually just jot things down quickly, and I’m not great about recording the source of the material. I would just love to find a conversation where I could insert this cool saying, but, alas, it hasn’t happened yet – but who knows, maybe one of these days.

Since it’s that time of year when I’m tempted to make resolutions, I thought I would post a quote I found this week among some old papers I was clearing out. Over the years, every now and them I come across a quote that I would like to remember. I usually jot it down very quickly on some scrap of paper and never see it again. Well, this week I came across one such quote: “THE KEY IS TO TAKE SMALL POSITIVE STEPS AND MOVE AHEAD CONSISTENTLY“. Where this came from or what it referred to, I haven’t a clue. However, the more I looked at it, the more I realized how smart a concept it is. My resolutions are usually to do more, be more efficient, get more exercise, lose weight, etc., and this little gem might just help me to do that. So, I think this year I’m just going to try to do those little things, those small steps, and while I might not make any dramatic headway, hopefully, I’ll be moving in the right direction. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

My first blog – Hooray!
